PASADENA — The UCLA football team stepped on the gas and didn’t let up on Saturday afternoon, scoring the most points in a first quarter since 1988 in its 59-7 win over North Carolina Central at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins didn’t even have the chance to make a third-down play until the third quarter.
Quarterback Dante Moore threw a touchdown pass on the Bruins’ first offensive play of the game when he connected with Sam Brown for a 67-yard strike not even 20 seconds into the game.
The freshman was one of five quarterbacks to play on Saturday and completed 8 of 12 passes for two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Collin Schlee was 1 for 4 for 15 yards while rushing for 60 yards and two touchdowns on three carries and Ethan Garbers completed one pass for 13 yards. Justyn Martin had two carries for 11 yards and Chase Griffin had one carry for nine yards.
Laiatu Latu pulled down an interception when the Eagles got the ball, showing the quickness of the defense can match that of the offense. The pick set the Bruins up on the 1-yard line, paving the way for Carson Steele (five carries, 83 yards, one TD) to pop it in for a touchdown.
Steele was one of four running backs to score against the Eagles. Anthony Adkins (10 carries, 96 yards), TJ Harden (five carries, 66 yards) and Colson Yankoff (six carries, 61 yards) also contributed touchdowns.
Moore threw his second touchdown of the first quarter to J.Michael Sturdivant on a 30-yard pass to extend UCLA’s lead to 21-0. Schlee came into the game with 4:28 left in the opening quarter and ran for a 57-yard touchdown and a 1-yard touchdown for a 35-0 edge by the end of the frame.
The Bruins put up 10 more points before halftime. RJ Lopez kicked a 24-yard field goal, then Harden took off for a 62-yard touchdown run. Garbers also saw time at quarterback, entering the game with 6:13 left in the quarter.
Schlee resumed at quarterback on UCLA’s first offensive possession of the third quarter, and Griffin and Martin received playing time as well. Schlee threw the Bruins’ first interception of the game, but Donavyn Pellot sacked North Carolina Central quarterback Walker Harris to keep the Eagles from getting too far on the ensuing possession.
Yankoff scored his first touchdown of the season on a 25-yard run to finish off a five-play, 72-yard Bruins drive. Adkins also scored a season-first touchdown on a short-yardage run that gave UCLA a 59-0 lead.
Justin Martin became the final UCLA quarterback to make an appearance as the third quarter came to a close.
Chris Mosley scored North Carolina Central’s only touchdown of the game on a 1-yard rush. Mosley went on a 7-yard run to set up his own touchdown run.
UCLA opens Pac-12 play at Utah on Sept. 23 at 12:30 p.m.
