UC Irvine’s 6-game winning streak snapped by Duquesne – Orange County Register
PITTSBURGH — The UC Irvine men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome its own miscues on Wednesday night, turning the ball over 20 times in a 66-62 loss to Duquesne that snapped the Anteaters’ six-game winning streak.
Duquesne shot 9 for 18 from 3-point range and went 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in the final 28 seconds to hold off UCI at UPMC Copper Fieldhouse.
Justin Hohn and Andre Henry each had 13 points for the Anteaters (6-2), who shot 40.7% from the field. Derin Saran added 12 points, Carter Welling added eight points, six rebounds and a blocked shot and Devin Tillis had seven points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Andrei Savrasov had 15 points (3 for 4 from 3-point range), seven rebounds and three steals to pace the Dukes (5-2), who shot 41.4% overall but had just 11 turnovers. David Dixon had 12 points, five rebounds and five blocks, and Dae Dae Grant added 11 points.
A 3-pointer by Henry and a pair of free throws by Carter Welling capped a 9-0 UCI run for a 27-16 first-half lead, but the Dukes responded by scoring the next 12 points as part of a 19-4 run over the final eight minutes to take a 35-31 lead by halftime.
Duquesne briefly built a double-digit lead (43-33) early in the second half, but UCI stayed within striking distance after that. Out of a timeout, Hohn knocked down a 3-pointer to get the Anteaters within 61-58 with 1:18 left.
Each side made a pair of free throws, then UCI’s Dean Keeler made a layup to get the visitors within 64-62 with seven seconds. Duquesne’s Dixon made two more free throws for a four-point lead with four seconds left, and the Anteaters turned the ball over one last time in the final seconds.
UCI had a 39-30 rebounding advantage, but Duquesne had a 17-7 advantage in points off turnovers.
