Temecula Prep girls volleyball teams tops Liberty to reach Division 8 championship match – Press Enterprise

WINCHESTER — In its run to Saturday night’s CIF Southern Section Division 8 semifinal match, the Temecula Prep girls volleyball team won three straight playoff matches without dropping a set.
That streak ended in the third set Saturday as the Patriots struggled with errors and a lack of service pressure. However, in the three-minute break before the fourth set, Temecula Prep refocused, ran out to an early lead and finished off a 25-19, 25-12, 24-26, 25-13 win.
The Patriots (26-5) advanced to next week’s championship match against unseeded Geffen Academy with date, site and time to be determined. This is only the second time in school history a team has reached the section finals (baseball in 2013) .
“We got really nervous in that third set and were afraid to make a mistake,” Temecula Prep coach Donald Reyes said. “In watching film, we knew this Liberty defense would make us earn every kill because the ball just does not find the floor against them… and they did just that.”
Temecula Prep used a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead in the opening set. Abby Pekrul had a kill and solo block while Jane Bacani had a pair of aces. Lauren Katakacha’s kill closed the Patriots’ lead to 14-11, but Pekrul finished with two kills and an ace in the final five points.
Bacani added an ace while Pekrul chipped in five kills as the Patriots took a 6-3 lead in the second. Sidney Gray’s kill stretched the lead to 14-5 and the Patriots rolled to a another win.
Throughout the match Liberty was impressive on defense despite Temecula Prep’s powerful arms. In set three the Bison were able to turn those digs into Patriot attacking errors and stave off a sweep. Pekrul had a pair of late aces before Liberty finished off a win.
In the fourth Temecula Prep raced out to an early 12-5 lead behind four kills from Gray, two by Pekrul, and a pair of aces from Bacani.
“We knew we didn’t play our best in that third set and used that break to tune everything out and focus on what was at hand,” Gray said. “I’ve enjoyed playing for coach Reyes so much and to get him into a championship match means everything.”
Temecula Prep closed out the match on a 6-0 run with two kills and a solo block from Kalea Mejia.
“We enjoy tonight but Monday our focus turns towards the finals,” Mejia said.
Pekrul had 20 kills and six aces to lead the Patriots while Gray added 10 kills and 3 1.2 blocks. Bacani had five of Temecula Prep’s 14 aces.
