REDLANDS — In baseball, the home team gets an advantage because it bats last. In hockey, the home team gets an advantage because its gets the last chance to put the players they want on the ice.

There is no such built-in advantage in high school girls soccer, but you couldn’t convince the coaches and players in Wednesday’s girls’ soccer match between Citrus Valley and Yucaipa.
Neither team was able to score a goal, so the 0-0 result means both teams still have a share of first place in the Citrus Belt League.
Yucaipa (9-5-1 overall) and Citrus Valley (8-7-2 overall) both have a 4-0-1 record in the CBL.
“Sometimes when the teams are both good, they cancel each other out,” Yucaipa coach Eric Corona said. “This is a tough place for us to play.”
Neither goalkeeper had to make spectacular saves, but each player was in the right position to stop shots.
“Yucaipa is our biggest competitor, and I think we played our best game,” said Kylie McCue, Citrus Valley’s senior goalkeeper. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get a win, but it’s better than losing.”
McCue recorded her fourth shutout of the 2023-24 campaign. She doesn’t know about playing soccer in college, but wants to attend San Jose State.
“San Jose has a powerful teaching program,” she said. “It’s also a nice campus and has cooler weather.”
Citrus Valley had better scoring chances during the game.
“They put a lot of pressure on you,” Corona said. “We expected them to come at us with pressure from the beginning. We didn’t see much of the ball and when we had our chances, we just didn’t connect.”
Corona said his goalkeeper, Mia Mares, is a good leader.
“Mia is good with her feet and she brings us calmness,” Corona said. “She’s our foundational piece. She gets other players to go to the right places.”
Mares is a junior who has played goalkeeper since she was seven years old. Her father, Chris Mare, is on the football and baseball coaching staffs at Redlands East Valley. Her brother, Michael, attends and plays at REV.
Mares had two strong saves in the 57th minute. Yucaipa will have a girls flag football team in the fall, and Mares is looking forward to playing.
The two teams play again on Jan. 31 in the final CBL match of the season. If both teams win the rest of their league matches, that game could determine this season’s league champion.
“We should be rested for that game, and we will have our fan base behind us,” Mares said.
