A middle child tries to even things out – Orange County Register
There are two things that rainy days are good for: baking and thinking back on my life. l was doing both one day during the recent rainstorms. It was the middle of the week…keep that middle bit in mind as you read on.
Standing at my kitchen sink, while spooning blueberry muffin batter into the flowered paper inserts I had put in the muffin tins, I became aware of the inequity of the portions. The ones on the edges of the tin were filled neatly almost to their brims while the middle ones wound up not only half full but with little batter blotches bubbled on the surrounding tin.
I felt badly for the ones that wound up just barely filled, or less. They looked unkempt, almost undeserving. Was all this empathy because I am a middle child? My older brother was special because he was the first. My younger brother was special because he was the baby and I, well, I just got stuck in the middle. You might say my blueberries never reached the top of the tins.
I had become really invested now, determined to make those middle babies into the stars they deserved to be. Forget equality, I’m filling their cups all the way to the top and sprinkling in extra berries. I’m even stealing batter from some of the perfectly filled cups to give to the middle guys. Let them see how it feels not to be so special. Was I making up for some kind of childhood deprivation that I felt? Keeping in mind that I was born exactly in the middle of the month made my case even stronger.
Energized by the power of the rain smacking the garden window panes, my fabricated persecution complex was getting stronger. I carefully cleaned up the batter blotches surrounding the middle muffins. Excited that I had elevated them from sad sacks to winners, I placed them carefully into a preheated and cheered them on while they baked. A middle muffin, looking tall and proud, was waving at me when I took the tin out of the oven.
“Middle is mighty,” I said, giving her a thumbs up.
